What rendering is

The Coat That Takes the Weather

Render is a coating applied to masonry to give it a finished face and, outside, to shed water away from the wall behind. Internally it works much like a backing coat. Externally it has a harder job, because it has to move slightly with the building and cope with rain, frost and sun without cracking.

That is why the system matters. Sand and cement is strong and traditional. Thin coat systems are more flexible and come through-coloured so they do not need painting. Which one is right depends on the substrate, the exposure and what is already on the wall.

From prep to perfect finish

Our Rendering Process

External render lives or dies on preparation and on the weather it is applied in. This is the order followed on every job.
Step 1

Assess, Strip & Protect

Windows, doors and ground are sheeted, then any failed render is taken off and the background checked. Hollow sections are found by tapping, and the reason the old coat failed is identified before anything new goes on.
Step 2

Beads & Base Coat

Stop beads, bell casts and corner beads are fixed so edges are straight and water is thrown clear of the wall. The base coat is then applied and, on thin coat systems, reinforcing mesh is embedded into it.
Step 3

Top Coat & Clean-Up

The finish coat is applied and worked to the agreed texture, keeping wet edges live so there are no join marks across the elevation. The site is then cleared down and waste taken away.

Cracked Render?

Fine crazing and structural cracking are not the same thing. The crack pattern is read first, because the fix for one is not the fix for the other.

Hollow or Blown Render?

Render that has lost its grip sounds hollow when tapped. It has to come off back to a sound background, not be skimmed over.

Damp Patches Inside?

Failed render lets water sit against the wall. Once the render is put right and the wall has dried, the internal damage can be made good.

Tired Pebbledash?

Pebbledash can be removed and the elevation re-rendered smooth, which changes the look of a property more than almost anything else.

New Extension to Match?

New work can be rendered and blended to the existing elevation, though an exact match on weathered render is not always achievable and we will say so honestly.

Green Staining or Algae?

Growth usually points to water sitting where it should be running off. Bell casts, drips and detailing get looked at, not just the surface.

Rendering FAQ

Which render system is right for my house?

It depends on the background, how exposed the wall is and what is already on it. Sand and cement is strong and traditional. Thin coat systems are more flexible and come through-coloured. The right choice is made at survey stage once the wall has been looked at.

Yes. We hold an NVQ Level 2 in Plastering and a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card. Both can be shown on request.
External rendering is weather dependent. Frost, heavy rain and strong direct sun all affect how the coat cures, so work is planned around the forecast. Rushing it in the wrong conditions is what causes problems later.
Anything above ground floor generally does. Scaffolding is arranged and quoted separately so you can see that cost clearly rather than having it buried in the price.
Sand and cement render is normally painted. Through-coloured thin coat systems are not, which is one of the reasons people choose them.
Fine surface crazing is often cosmetic. Cracks that follow a line, open up at corners or appear above openings can point to movement or a problem behind. They get looked at before anything is applied over the top.
New render can be blended to existing work, but weathered render changes colour and texture over time so an exact match is not always achievable. We will tell you honestly what to expect before starting.
