What plastering is

Building the Wall Back Up, Coat by Coat

Plastering, often called float and set, is a two-stage job. A backing coat is applied first to build out the surface and straighten it, then a finish coat goes on top to give the smooth, flat face you decorate.

It is the right choice when the existing plaster has failed, when a wall has been stripped back to brick or block, or when a surface is too uneven for a thin skim to correct. It takes longer than skimming and uses more material, which is reflected in the quotation.

From prep to perfect finish

Our Plastering Process

Plastering goes wrong when the preparation is rushed or the coats are not given time to work. This is the order followed on every job.
Step 1

Strip Back & Protect

Floors are sheeted and sockets masked, then failed plaster is taken off and the background cleaned down. Beads are fixed to corners and openings so the finished edges are straight and true.
Step 2

Backing Coat Applied

The undercoat is applied and ruled off to straighten the wall, then keyed ready for the finish. This is the stage that decides whether the wall ends up flat, so it is not rushed.
Step 3

Finish Coat & Clean-Up

The finish coat goes on in thin passes and is trowelled up at the right moment for a smooth, closed surface. The site is then cleared down and the waste taken away.

Blown or Hollow Plaster?

Where plaster has lost its bond it has to come off, not be covered over. The wall is stripped back to a sound background and built up again.

Walls Stripped Back to Brick?

Bare brick or block is straightened with a backing coat and finished on top, giving you a proper wall rather than a patched one.

After a Removed Chimney Breast?

The new opening is beaded, filled and plastered so the repair sits flush with the surrounding wall instead of showing as a panel.

Damage Following a Leak?

Once the source has been dealt with and the wall has dried, the damaged area is cut out and re-plastered to match the surrounding surface.

Uneven or Bowed Walls?

A backing coat can be built out and ruled off to correct a lot of movement that a thin skim would simply follow.

Poor Work from a Previous Contractor?

Where a previous finish has failed or was never flat, the surface is taken back and re-done properly rather than patched again.

Plastering FAQ

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?
Skimming is a thin finishing coat over a surface that is already sound. Plastering, or float and set, means applying a backing coat to build out and straighten the wall first, then finishing on top. Plastering is what you need when the existing surface has failed or is badly out of true.
Yes. We hold an NVQ Level 2 in Plastering and a CSCS Blue Skilled Worker Card. Both can be shown on request.
It varies with ventilation, the season and the background underneath. Wait until the plaster has gone a uniform pale shade with no dark patches, then apply a watered-down mist coat before your top coats.
Move small items and valuables. Larger furniture will be moved and covered, and floors are sheeted before work begins. Rooms being fully plastered are best cleared where possible.
No. Plastering over a wall that is still damp will fail, often within months. The source has to be dealt with first and the wall allowed to dry, then it can be re-plastered properly.
Yes. Bare masonry is treated for suction, beaded where needed, then built out with a backing coat and finished on top.
Stripping old plaster is the messy part, so floors are sheeted and doorways sealed where practical. Waste is bagged and taken away and the room is swept before we leave.
